Sasui Palijo


Sassui Palijo (Sindhi: سسي پليجو) is a politician and a columnist from Thatta, Sindh, Pakistan. Sassui Palijo is affiliated to Pakistan Peoples Party and is currently a Senator on women's reserved seat from Sindh. Sassui Palijo was elected Chairperson of Senate Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs in 2018. She was first elected Member of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh from Mirpur Sakro Thatta PS-85 THATTA-II in 2002 and later in 2008. She was Minister for Culture in Sindh cabinet led by Syed Qaim Ali Shah from 2008 to 2013. She was the only directly elected female assembly member in Sindh out of 168 assembly members.

Political Career

Born on 10 January 1976 in Jungshahi, Thatta.[6] She is a double graduate, MA Political Science from the University of Sindh and the undergraduate degree in law from London.[7] [8] Ms. Sassui has been an active campaigner for human rights and gender equality. During General Musharraf's military rule, she was arrested many times in Islamabad, Thatta, Karachi, Lahore, and Thar for protesting against the military rule.

Family Political Background
Sassui Palijo's father, Ghulam Qadir Palijo, is Chairman District Council Thatta, has been a Member of Provincial Assembly of Sindh twice and is an active senior politician in Mirpur Sakro, district Thatta. Her mother, Akhtar Baloch, was a very vocal political rights campaigner and student leader against three military dictatorships of General Ayub, General Yahya Khan, and General Zia and was also the first female political prisoner of Pakistan under General Yahya's martial law. Her grandmother late Zarina Baloch was a well-known folk singer, teacher, award-winning actress & novelist and a political activist who has been conferred the title of JiJi (mother) of Sindh by the people of Sindh. Her uncle Rasul Bux Palijo, is a highly respected political thinker, leftist scholar, literary critic & globally acclaimed Sindhi writer.

Zulfiqar Mirza

Zulfiqar Mirza is a Pakistani politician who is affiliated with the Grand Democratic Alliance(GDA). He is from Badin District, Sindh, Pakistan. He acquired his secondary education at Cadet College Petaro in the late 1960s and graduated from Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences at Jamshoro. Zulfiqar is married to Fahmida Mirza who was elected as the first female Speaker of the National Assembly of Pakistan on March 19, 2008. She is also the first female parliamentary speaker in the Muslim world. Zulfiqar Mirza was the Home Minister of Sindh till June 2011.

Zulfiqar was assigned the portfolio of Jails and prisons, as well as the portfolio of Senior Minister for Works, Services, and Forest in the Sindh cabinet. He remained a member of the Provincial Assembly of Sindh, and a member of the PPP Central Executive Committee, and Vice President of PPP (Sindh) till 28, August 2011. He is suspended from the committee in 2015.

He is also a member of the board of directors of Mirza Sugar Mills located in Badin District, Sindh. He is also the father of Member of National Assembly, Hasnain Mirza.

Allegation against MQM


In November 2011, Mirza left for London carrying documents he claimed contained evidence against Altaf Hussain and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) with regards the murder of Imran Farooq. Mirza presented the evidence to the Scotland Yard on 17 November 2011.


Fight against Corruption

Zulfiqar Mirza has said that the political gathering of the Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf was an indicator of change in Pakistan and thousands of PPP workers, loyal to Benazir Bhutto and Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, along with Shah Mehmood Qureshi would come out on the streets for a change too. Mirza said that he was still a PPP worker and vowed to fight against corrupt ministers and cliques in the party. However, Mirza himself has been declared a loan defaulter by State Bank of Pakistan.
